Clara Cumming

Rhody Family Funeral Home

Clara Aileen was born in Brant Township on July 20, 1921 to Tom and Mary (Needham) Woelfle. She was the second oldest of four children; Margaret, Harold and Andrew who died in infancy. Clara had many fond memories as a child which included walking to Vesta school through the fields, over the snow banks, and even eating rhubarb along the way in the summer. The Woelfle family mix farmed raising dairy and beef cattle, chickens, ducks and horses (Clara's least favourite). As Clara got older, she enjoyed attending dances.

While at a one such dance, Clara caught the eye of a young man by the name of Alvin Cumming. They dated for a while and were then married on January 28, 1950 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Paisley. Alvin grew up in Bruce Township and the young couple thus farmed on the 12th of Bruce, or as Clara liked to refer to it “the best line in Bruce Township.” Here Clara mix farmed along with her husband. Clara often took care of the barn chores and loved to be outside, whether it was caring for her garden or mowing the lawn, the two worked hand and hand to provide for their family. The couple soon welcomed their five children; Sheila was born in 1950, Robert in 1952, Reg in 1954, Edith in 1955, and Glen in 1958. In 1957 a fire destroyed the Cumming home but Alvin being the handyman he was, he acted as a contractor and rebuilt it. He was a self-taught man proficient as an electrician, mechanic and plumber. It was times like these that Clara was so thankful for her neighbours, friends and family as they were always there in times of need.

Clara has always been heavily involved in her community. Just prior to being married, she was one of many young adults that took short courses, which she often talked of. They were taught many different life skills and met many community members. She loved this opportunity and often recalled the benefits of these courses (she even kept her notes, just ask her kids!). Once the children were in school, Clara attended Home and School Meetings. She was a member of the Bruce County Heritage Association (of which Alvin was a founding member), and was a life time member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed many years as a member with the Brucedale Women's Institute while living on the 12th of Bruce.

Faith was also an important aspect of Clara’s life, attending church in her youth with girlfriends (church was 6 - 7 miles from home), and belonging to and participating in the activities of the Anglican Church in Paisley for as long as she was able to attend. If all that wasn’t enough, Clara also loved to quilt and constantly tended to her beautiful flowerbeds and gardens. Not one to stay still, Clara & Alvin loved to travel visiting the British Isles, California and Florida as well as both coasts of Canada. Clara enjoyed the spring months, as it meant more time in the garden and tending to her flowers, listening to hymns and of course reading! In fact, believe it or not, Clara enjoyed reading so much that she often joked she read through entire libraries. Corresponding with family and friends through letter writing was almost a full time occupation for Clara as well. She was constantly writing to friends, family and even had a pen pal for many years from Australia. She was a caring woman who always enjoyed visiting or visits from friends and family.

In 1983 the couple moved from the farm into an apartment in Paisley. Once in the apartment, Clara and Alvin spent a great deal camping to escape the summer heat. Their trailer was conveniently located a block and a half from home at the Paisley campground. The entire family spent countless hours there over the years, especially the grandchildren, enjoying each other's company and the outdoors.

Sadly having suffered a previous stroke, Alvin died January 14, 2003 just before their 53rd wedding anniversary.

Clara's strength and courage was always present, wanting to remain independent living in her own home, and even driving until the age of 91! In January of 2016 she made the move to Southampton Care Centre where she continued to enjoy life until her final days. Sadly, Clara passed away at Grey Bruce Health Services, Southampton, after a brief illness, on Sunday, July 30, 2017 in her 97th year.

Dear mother of Robert (Nancy) of Saugeen Township, Reg (Karen) of Bruce Township and Edith (Brian) Beech of Paisley and mother-in-law of Le-ann Cumming (Brian McAllister) of Paisley and Doug Wilson of Owen Sound. Clara will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Shannon (Steve), Amanda (Scott), Tyler, Brad (Renee), Steven, Gordon (Laura), Valerie (Jamie), Lana (Luke), Bill (Victoria), Joe (Laurel), Paul (Jen), Scott and Mark (Rebecca) as well as her great-grandchildren Justin, Tanner, Amber, Cameron, Theodore, Penelope, Payton, Norman, Fiona, Simon, Julia, Evelyn, Kylie, Brynn and Claire. Clara was predeceased by husband Alvin (2003), son Glen (1988), daughter Sheila Wilson (1993), sister Margaret (Harold) Eldred and brothers Harold (Betty) Woelfle and Andrew in infancy.

Visitation will be held at Rhody Family Funeral Home, Chesley on Wednesday from 7 – 9 p.m. where a funeral service celebrating Clara’s life will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 11 a.m. Interment in Chesley Cemetery.

Memorial donations to the Immanuel Missionary Church (Paisley Food Bank in the memo line), Bruce County Heritage Association or Southampton Care Centre Residents Council would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

Dear Nathan, I cannot say thank you enough for everything you and the rest of the Rhody Family Funeral Home team done for our family with Mom's passing. From the moment you got to Mom's house your professionalism was second to none. You listened and read between the lines yet missed nothing, every little touch was simply perfect, you left nothing undone, your care and compassion to ensure our family made Mom proud one more time, and for that I am forever grateful. You took a very difficult time for us and made it as simple and stress free for us as humanly possible. Nathan you should be very proud of yourself and the rest of your team. You have definitely set the bar very high for any other funeral home in the province to follow. Again thank you

Sincerely, Deb and Doug

Nathan: Thank you so very much for all that you have done for my Mom and my family. Your friendship during this difficult time was truly heartfelt. You made us feel welcome and like a part of your family. The whole time we spoke both at the nursing home and then at your place was a very peaceful experience. Not once were we made to feel like we did not belong there. Your attention to detail in everything that all of us said shows in the story of my Dad’s life and the video. Where there were concerns, you set them all at ease. I so appreciate all that you did for my Mom in helping her take care of cancellations and notifications for my Dad. It set her mind at ease knowing that you were taking care of all of this for her. It set me at ease knowing that she would not have to deal with the frustrations that sometimes come in taking care of these things. You and your family have gone above and beyond in all that you have done for us and I am truly thankful. The warmth and caring went home with us that day. We knew that the right choice had been made in allowing you to take care of my Dad. Again, thank you.

Katie

Our aunt & uncle were buried from a different funeral home and we noticed a huge difference in the funeral home services provided. Our mom and dad looked so natural (thank you!) while our aunt and uncle did not. Thank you Nathan, we can't begin to tell you how much we appreciate you and your staff this year!

The beautiful funeral home sets the stage to reflect the deceased's individual personality. Nathan's artistic ability is only surpassed by his compassion, sincerity and understanding. He goes above and beyond the required duties. His staff is second to none. Darlene Rhody soft spoken and sympathetic and Morris Emke gentlemanly and obliging.
