Jim Camm

Rhody Family Funeral Home

Don’t forget to smile! 🙂 – Those were words that Jim lived by.

James Clifford was born on Sunday, March 5, 1939 in Ingersoll, Ontario to Raymond and Freda (Woodhouse) Camm. Jim was the third of five children: Joan (born in 1936), Bob (1938), Jim, Janet (1949) and Terry (1951). The Camm family resided in Ingersoll where Jim attended Victoria Memorial Public School and Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute.

While attending high school Jim met a young woman by the name of Helen “Margaret” Spencer. A friend of his challenged Jim to try and get her to go out with him, even though she was just starting dating this very same friend. Well, Jim must have been convincing as on September 26, 1958 the two love birds were married in the manse of the Baptist Church in Ingersoll. In time the couple welcomed Sandra in 1968 and Lynda in 1969.

Jim worked various jobs once he finished high school. He was then able to get on with Northern Telecom in London, as a set-up man, where he remained for the next thirty-two years until his retirement on May 10, 1992.

Jim had a passion for sports. In his youth he enjoyed playing hockey and baseball, before becoming more of a spectator in later years, particularly of his grandsons. He followed the boys to countless lacrosse, baseball, soccer and curling events. His favourite professional teams included the Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Tigers and of course the Toronto Blue Jays. His grandsons recalled countless trips to Toronto to take in Blue Jay’s games with their grandfather, memories they cherish dearly. He also took great enjoyment in getting outside for a nice walk or even a bike ride in his younger years. He loved the fall season, the colours (or shades) black and white, roast turkey, listening to country-western classics and reading his daily devotions. He used to collect coins but dispersed of it in recent years.

Jim and Margaret enjoyed travelling and experienced Bermuda; Margarita Island; Corpus Christie, Texas; and Nova Scotia to name just a few. When the girls were younger, Jim and Margaret often took the family camping at Port Burwell Provincial Park, on Lake Erie. The two also enjoyed just taking off for the weekend, to get away, or even take an afternoon and just go for a drive. Jim always took great pride in and cared for his vehicle, buying a new one every two years. Jim often drove a Chrysler in his younger years however in recent years it was always a GM.

Upon Jim’s retirement the couple relocated to Chesley in 1993. Here he enjoyed the benefits of living in a small community and along with Margaret volunteered with Meals on Wheels. However, the real purpose of the move North was to allow them to be closer to their family and more specifically their grandsons. There were countless bike rides, hockey games in the basement, games of crokinole or just playing around in the backyard with grandpa. Apparently he was also quite the cook and baker! Jim cooked regularly for his grandsons, whether it was breakfast for the boys or his famous peanut butter cookies.

Jim was a happy man, who was always smiling, making the best of every situation. His strong, loving and giving personality will live on in those lives he touched. He was a terrific father, devoted husband and caring grandfather, always taking care of his family needs. And who could forget his pranks, always trying to pull a quick one on those closest to him. Jim’s faith was of great strength to him. His grandfather instilled this from a young age and he read his devotions daily. Jim gave God all the credit for having led the life he lived.

Jim was diagnosed with cancer in July 2017. Although his prognosis was not good, you would have never know that if you talked to Jim. He was always upbeat, happy and of course smiling, enjoying every day to the fullest. Sadly, Jim passed away surrounded by his entire family, at Chapman House, Owen Sound on Friday, November 17, 2017 in his 79th year.

James Clifford Camm of Chesley, formerly of Ingersoll, passed away surrounded by his loving family at Chapman House, Owen Sound on Friday, November 17, 2017 in his 79th year.

Jim was a long time employee of Northern Telecom in London. Beloved husband of Margaret (Spencer). Cherished father of Sandra Walmsely of Paisley and Lynda Camm Escamilla (Scott Ashton) of Allenford. Jim will live on in the hearts and minds of his beloved grandsons, Joel, Luke, Noah and Nate. Loving brother of Bob (Carol) Camm of Truro, Nova Scotia and Janet Gee of Strathroy. Jim was predeceased by his sister Joan Hunt, brother Terry Camm and his parents Raymond and Freda (Woodhouse) Camm.

In respecting Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family memorial service will be held.

Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Chapman House would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

If there was one thing Jim would encourage us to remember and live daily it would be to “Always wear a smile, because your smile is a reason for many others to smile!” 🙂
