Kathryn Thomson

Rhody Family Funeral Home

Kathryn Elizabeth was born on July 6, 1958 in London, Ontario to parents John and Isobel (Hanna) McLauchlan. Kathy was soon joined by younger siblings David (1961) and Karen (1965). The McLauchlan family resided in the village of Lambeth where Kathryn was among the first class of students enrolled in A.E. Duffield Public School.

Kathy’s parents, John and Isobel, were very musical individuals and therefore, Kathryn and her siblings were introduced to music at a young age. Kathryn soon took up the piano, spending countless hours perfecting her talents, eventually obtaining her Grade 10 piano. Her love of music was present throughout her life, and she blessed many with her music. When not playing the piano she loved to listen to anything performed by the Bee Gees, Rod Stewart and her all time favourite, Elton John.

Once again Kathryn was in the first class to attend Saunders Secondary School in London. After graduating from high school she enrolled in Executive Secretarial Studies at Fanshawe College. Here Kathryn made some new girlfriends from the north, eventually tagging along with them for weekend trips home. On one such weekend, Kathryn was introduced to Kenneth William Thomson. The two hit it off immediately and began dating. Shortly after, Kathryn took a job opportunity at a bank in Owen Sound, the year was 1979. Their relationship continued to blossom and the young couple were married at Lambeth United Church on October 31, 1981. They quickly settled in on the Thomson Homestead, where Ken was a dairy farmer. Over the coming years, Kathryn spent some time working for the Town of Chesley and Middleton Insurance. Kathryn and Ken’s family began to expand in 1984 with the arrival of Graham. Michael followed 18 months later in 1985, with Braydon completing the family in 1995.

Once the boys arrived, Kathryn turned her attention to her family. Ken and the boys became her world, and she did everything in her power to care and support them. In addition to regular motherly duties, she became a Beaver leader, to spend extra time with the boys, and was instrumental in their minor hockey careers. She even took up the art of Karate with her boys.  She was a very involved mother!  It was during this time that she began working for the Bruce County Board of Education, covering a maternity leave. Opportunities continued to present themselves and Kathryn soon began working full-time at the Board Office in the Purchasing Department.

In her free time, Kathryn loved a good visit!  She also created beautiful quilts, creative scrapbooks and she enjoyed decorating her home. Her true passion though was shopping!  From a young age she enjoyed clothes shopping at Westmount Mall, and this love continued throughout the duration of her life. She would always look forward to her yearly girls trip to Port Huron, Michigan. Kathryn was also a fabulous cook and excelled at baking. The boys fondly remember her shepherds pie, manicotti and mom’s homemade pizza every Friday night.  She even canned her own jam!  Kathryn remained active within her church, Geneva Presbyterian, where she acted as a Sunday school teacher and spent numerous years on the Board of Management. In recent years, when limited by her health, she immersed herself in a variety of Netflix programming. Her favourites included A Typical, The Staircase and The Fosters, just to name a few.

Kathryn’s family have many fond memories of time spent at the trailer at both Southampton and more recently Plympton-Wyoming. She loved the beach, especially Gobles Grove, as well as loved the opportunity to travel, both near and abroad. Kathryn had a particular fondness for root beer floats and always made time to stop with the boys at Frosty Queen in Wingham while making her frequent trips back to visit family in London. She loved to read, with Stephen King being one of her favourite authors. When taking time for herself, she enjoyed participating in exercise classes. Their family dogs, Sam, Ashley, Brandi, and Bailey, also kept Kathryn active through the years as she loved to take walks with them.

In 2006, Ken and Kathryn moved into Chesley from the farm. By this time she had left the School Board environment and was working as an office manager in an elementary school. She had short stops in Hanover and Walkerton before settling in at G.C. Houston in Southampton, a position she held until 2016 when her cancer diagnosis forced her to take a leave.

Kathryn was a strong, kind, loving woman, who was very family-oriented. She was organized, thoughtful, fun and always optimistic. She worked hard, and always put Ken, her children and grandchildren first. She was a loving and devoted big sister and enjoyed spending time with her niece and nephews. Kathryn was a wonderful friend and colleague.  She could get along with anyone and always put her best foot forward. Sadly, Kathryn lost her battle with cancer on Friday, November 15, 2019, at the age of 61.

Kathryn will be lovingly remembered by her husband and best friend of 38 years, Ken Thomson. She was a loving and caring mother to Graham of Toronto, Michael (Paddy) of London and Braydon of Toronto and very proud grandmother to Callum, Evan, Felix and Garrett. Kathryn was a devoted sister and aunt to David and Teresa (Dylan and Danny) McLauchlan and Karen and Alastair (McKayla and A.J.) Bruff, all of London. She will be forever remembered by her many dear friends. Kathryn was predeceased by her parents John and Isobel (Hanna) McLauchan.

A memorial service honouring Kathryn’s life will be held at Geneva Presbyterian Church, Chesley on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Geneva Presbyterian Church or Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
