Klaus Muller

Rhody Family Funeral Home

Klaus Walter August was born June 22, 1934 in Wildberg, Germany to Elizabeth (Suckrow) and Walter Muller. He was the eldest of three children; Klaus, sister Helga and brother Uwe. When Klaus was young the family moved to a rural area outside of Gransee, Germany. Here the family lived in a toll house. Walter, Klaus’ father, was the roadmaster and a blacksmith, so the Muller’s lived on the outskirts of town where the children attended public and high school. Klaus wanted to continue his schooling however in order for him to follow through with this; his family had to join the Communist party, and they did not, so he was encouraged by his father to become an electrician.

In the early 1950’s Klaus began his two and a half year apprenticeship. He later fled Eastern Germany, from Camp Berlin and settled with his mother’s sister, aunt Else, in Western Germany. Here Klaus finished his apprenticeship.

While living in Gransee, Klaus met and went out with a young girl by the name of Christel Lehmann. Several years later they became engaged. In 1956 Klaus immigrated to Canada landing in Saint-Jean, Quebec where he began working as an electrician for a wage of $1 – $1.10 an hour. Christel followed soon after to be married and settling in Niagara Falls together. They had two children, Ina born in 1958 and Mark born in 1962. In 1971 the family moved to Jarvis, when Klaus began working for Ontario Hydro at the new OPG Nanticoke Generating Station. Sadly, their marriage ended in 1973.

Klaus was introduced to Annemarie Rohde during a visit to Canada in 1970. Klaus had worked with Annemarie’s father, Herman Wiedenbrueck at one of the Sir Adam Beck Hydroelectric Generating Stations in Niagara Falls. The couple soon moved in with Annemarie’s parents while Klaus began working at Bruce Nuclear Power Plant. They moved to Chesley in 1974 before settling on their piece of paradise on Grey Rd. 3 in 1979. Anne and Klaus were married on July 31, 1982. In 1994, Klaus semi-retired and worked as a journeymen electrician for the remainder of his career.

Klaus had a number of interests outside of being an electrician and one of these interests was collecting stamps. He also taught children about gun safety. Klaus started the Committee of the 1000 fighting pollution. By the 1970’s, there were more than 700 chemical plants and steel mills dotting the Niagara River waterway. Each day, some 950 million litres of waste water were being washed away by the river. This did not sit well with Klaus so he stood up for what he believed and fought back! This did not go over well with the powers that be and Klaus was handed a gag order.

Klaus also enjoyed travelling. In fact he actually quit his job to enjoy a trip of a lifetime with Anne. They took all their savings, packed the car and headed south. It was November of 1978 and they began in Myrtle Beach. Over the next five months they explored much of the Gulf of Mexico ending in El Paso. It was March of 1979 and Klaus politely told Anne that the vacation was over as they had ran out of money. 🙂

Klaus enjoyed romantic music and loved to read. In fact, Klaus consumed books on everything from National Geographic to history novels. Apparently he also enjoyed the occasional beverage. Metaxa, rye, beer and their own homemade wine where some of his favourites. Together, with Anne, they made a variety of wines over the years, first from wild grapes, then dandelion and finally red wine kits. He also enjoyed eating rouladen. Klaus and Anne shared their living space with their cat “Tinka” and their two German Shepherds “Anouck” and “Senta.”

Klaus was a gentle, caring romantic, who would do anything for anyone. He was also a great listener and conservationist, who loved this beautiful country we all enjoy. Hunting and fishing were also great passions of Klaus’ and he spent countless hours enjoying these pastimes.

In 2010, Klaus began to experience abdominal pain and the following year had surgery whereby it was found that he had cancer of the small bowel. Despite the diagnosis, Klaus remained positive and lived every day to the fullest. He passed away suddenly at Hanover & District Hospital on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 in his 85th year.

Beloved husband and best friend of Annemarie. Loving father of Ina (Brian) Duxbury of Caledonia and Mark (Lisa Blackstock) of Uxbridge. He will be remembered by his grandchildren, Sebastian, Thea, Averaam, Savanah, Portia and great-grandfather of Brannon, Owen and Ella. Klaus will be fondly remembered by his sister Helga (Norbert) Bemmann of Germany and sister-in-law Lori Warren of Niagara Falls. He will be missed by his niece Wendy (Kevin) Oaks as well as her children Cory (Tiffany), Steven and Joshua (Kaitlin). Klaus was predeceased by his brother Uwe and parents Walter and Elizabeth (Suckrow) Muller.

A memorial service celebrating Klaus’ life will be held at Rhody Family Funeral Home, Chesley on Saturday, December 1, 2018 beginning at 1 p.m. Inurnment in Chesley Cemetery.

Memorial donations to Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides or National Service Dogs’ would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

“Klaus, may the heavenly pond be forever stocked!”
