William “Roger” Keyes was born on Wednesday, April 29, 1942, to parents Irving Carlyle and Annie Laura (Cooke) Keyes. The family resided in the hamlet of Glammis, where he was welcomed by older brother Bob (1940) and was soon joined by younger siblings, Wayne (1949) and Joyce (1951). The children attended S.S. #16 Greenock in Glammis. Like many of that era, Roger didn’t pursue high school but instead joined his father in the family business. The Keyes’ family owned and operated a Plumbing and Electrical Store and a Farm Equipment business.
In the mid 60’s, Roger decided to move out on his own and relocated to the Kitchener area. Over the next few years, Roger tried his hand at various jobs. He eventually found his calling, driving a dump truck. He went on to spend some time in Sarnia before returning home to the Glammis area. By this time, Roger had purchased his own dump truck and was working independently. In his free time, he could usually be found fixing anything and everything. When not repairing his own belongings, Roger could be found helping friends and neighbours with repairs. He taught himself a variety of skills and trades throughout his life and became quite the handyman. His talents didn’t stop there as he was also a well-respected mechanic. He literally could fix anything, and often loved to tinker and work away on older General Motors models and a variety of tractors.
Irving and Annie built an A-Frame cottage in Glammis and then relocated it to Inverhuron on the back of a flatbed. The family cottage became Roger’s permanent home in the mid 70’s, where he remained, living on his own until recent months. Roger led a simple, quiet life and often enjoyed keeping to himself.
In more recent years, Roger dealt with Kidney issues that required regular dialysis. Unfortunately, in recent weeks, his Kidney functions declined further, and he passed away at South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Chesley, on Saturday, April 19, 2025, in his 83rd year.
Loving brother of Joyce (Ron) Findlay of Scone. Cherished uncle of Kevin (Jody) Findlay, and great-uncle to Savannah Findlay, Austin Findlay, and Olivia Denomy. Roger was predeceased by his niece Cheryl Findlay, brothers Bob and Wayne Keyes, and his parents Irving and Annie (Cooke) Keyes.
A graveside service honouring Roger’s life will be held at Purdy Cemetery, Greenock Township, on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at 3 p.m. All are welcome!
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to The Kidney Foundation of Canada or the charity of your choice would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
Sure will miss you. We had good memories from our younger years. Bye cousin.
Joyce & Ron, my condolences on Roger’s passing. He was always such a nice guy who was trusted by everyone. Remember the good times.
Joyce:
Your brother Roger was our good neighbor for many many years . He was able to fix almost anything and he was a real help to us in keeping an eye on our cottage property.
My last good visit with him was last fall in November and he was starting to have real issues with the dialysis. We will miss him greatly.
