Stacy Howard was born on January 27, 1945 in Smithville, Ontario to parents Joseph and Orral (Povelofskie) Charlton. He was the second eldest of five children, Orral, Stacy, Beverly, Harold and Gloria. Stacy attended public and high school in Smithville before heading out into the workforce. After a couple stops, Stacy followed his father’s footsteps and began a thirty year career with Stelco Steel in Hamilton. Here he worked as an overhead crane operator until his retirement.
On June 23, 1963 Stacy married his high school sweetheart Rebecca Christine Smart in Abbington, Ontario. The young couple soon settled in Smithville before starting their family, welcoming Lorie in 1964, Debra (1965), Tammy (1972), Gwen (1976) and Amanda “Mandy” (1977). The Charlton family enjoyed stops in Elora and Grassie before purchasing a 100 acre farm close to York, a small village just outside of Cayuga.
In 1990 Stacy retired and moved back to Chesley where his parents were raised and where he had worked at Krugs furniture factory in his teenage years. Chesley had always been home to him, having spent many summers here with friends and relatives over the years. The Charltons soon settled on Sconeview Farm, before purchasing Sconeview Bed & Breakfast in 1999. Throughout his retirement, Stacy remained active in the community, acting as a councillor in Arran-Elderslie as well as being involved with the most recent Chesley Medical Clinic expansion.
Stacy might have been a touch on the stubborn side 🙂 but he was also extremely tough and never gave up no matter the situation. His loving and caring personality was ever present, and often displayed in small acts of kindness, like blowing snow for all the neighbours! Stacy would go out of his way to help anyone and was always there when needed. He was particularly fond of anything Star Trek or Lord of the Rings and even went to the extent of naming his pet poodle Mr. Frodo Baggins. Yes, you read that right!
Stacy enjoyed family, farming and was also an avid hunter. There were many a year where he travelled north to Trout Creek to moose hunt with the work gang. Stacy and Becky were fortunate enough to travel from one ocean to the other enjoying all the treasures Canada had to offer. His sense of adventure was ever present and particularly noticeable in Alaska when escorting Becky up the Dalton Highway (the ice road truckers highway) to Prudhoe Bay. Quite the soul of an adventurer to say the least.
Family was his life and all important to him. During his last days it was his greatest joy knowing they were all together and there for him, helping him cope with the trials and tribulations of his final days. Stacy’s courageous and optimistic spirit was an inspiration to everyone that knew him. A special thank you goes out to the medical team that did everything they could to assist Stacy in his battle, they include Dr. Winterton, Dr. Batton, and Nurse Practitioner, Anne Beck. Stacy’s family would also like to thank his longtime friends Pat Rogers and Larry Charlton for their support.
Stacy will be remembered with love and for his never ending will to live, while never giving up. During his long battle his belief in God and God’s miracles gave him the strength and ability to carry on until he was called home on Friday, October 5, 2018, surrounded by his family, in his 74th year.

Loving father of Lorie (Steve) Bates of Ayton, Debbie Charlton of Chesley, Gwen Charlton (Chris Hynds) of Grande Prairie, Alberta and Mandy Leask (Richard Olson) of Keremeos, B.C. Stacy will be dearly missed by his grandchildren Nicole, Jessica, Jon, Christopher, Stacey, Robert, Dustin, Brook and great-grandchildren Cheyenne, Austin, Emma, Josh, Tyler. He is survived by his siblings Orral (Roger) Plante, Beverly Rose, Gloria (Clyde) Geddie and Harold (Rose). Stacy was predeceased by his infant daughter Tammy Lynn and parents Joseph and Orral (Povelofskie) Charlton.
Visitation will be held at Rhody Family Funeral Home, Chesley on Thursday, October 11th from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. where a funeral service celebrating Stacy’s life will be held on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 1 p.m. Interment in Chesley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Chesley Medical Clinic (cheques payable to Municipality of Arran Elderslie) or Chesley Hospital Foundation would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
