As the dusk of yet another beautiful prairie sunset began to form Elvin “Andy” Franklin Anderson of Winnipeg, RCMP Sergeant retired and previous owner of Robins Donuts, passed quietly away from complications of a short illness on August 26th, 2023 at the age of 90. He was surrounded by the love of family.
Andy is remembered as a gentle giant (at 6’2″ and size 15 shoes), a fair, kind, loyal, and faithful man, who had a twinkle in his beautiful blue eyes when teasing or telling a joke. Born in Revelstoke, Dad and Papa received his Long Service Medal with the RCMP having served in Ottawa and numerous places in Manitoba, where he fell in love with a prairie maiden, a prairie sunrise and a prairie sunset.
Andy and the love of his life Sonja (Horn) celebrated 65 years of marriage June 7th with family, shortly before he contracted COVID. Andy is dearly loved and will be deeply missed by daughters Rev. Terri-Ann Mattiasson of Chesley, Ontario, Dr. Thora Anderson and husband Reed Soderstrom Esq. of Minot, North Dakota, and son Lars Anderson and wife Sharon (Lambkin) Anderson of Winnipeg. Papa is remembered by his grandchildren Geoff and wife Danielle (Perry) Lambkin, Opal Anderson and husband Jason Sweet, Alyssa Lambkin-Anderson and Patrick Anderson, Aretha Soderstrom and fiancé Dan Horne, and Austin and Margaret Soderstrom. Andy leaves behind his great-grandchildren Addison, Kadence, Kaylee, and Indiana as well as sister-in-law Glennys Horn. Elvin will be missed by staff and residents of Deer Lodge Centre as well as numerous friends, colleagues, customers, cousins, nieces, and nephews across Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.
Andy was predeceased by his parents Karl Oskar and Annie Helen Anderson, brother Bert and wife Veronica Anderson, infant brother Melvin, sisters-in-law Anna and husband Tony Bloxham and Ruth Horn, brothers-in-law Hank Horn, Kurt and wife Jacquie Horn, Del and wife Kathy Horn, and Bill Masson.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Deer Lodge Foundation, (www.deerlodgecentrefoundation.com/donate/) or St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, (E-transfers can be sent to [email protected]), would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy. Thank you to the compassionate staff of Deer Lodge Centre, as well as to Pastor Bjoern Meinhardt and Spiritual Caregiver Ken Quiring.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2023 at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut Street (Corner of Wolseley Ave.), Winnipeg, 204-775-6477. The service will be recorded and can be viewed on the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church website in the days following. A life legacy video and longer life story will also be available on the Bardal Website. https://www.bardal.

John and I are both thankful that we were able to spend good time with Elvin both in 2018 at the reunion and last year on his 90th birthday!💙 Such a gracious, loving man whom we will miss! We sure enjoyed his stories and his laughter. It was clear as we visited with Elvin that his grace and love and sense of humor strongly blessed his wife and family! We can’t thank you enough Terri-Ann, Lars/Sharon and Thora/Reed (our special cousins) for bringing us Anderson’s together! Such a blessing! We are sending up prayers for your mom Sonya and all of you during this hard time as I ask Jesus to hold you all a little closer. We can’t wait to see you all again, hopefully soon! God Bless✝️
Love you all😘🤗🙏

Thinking of you, Terri-Ann and your family, sending hugs and prayers to you
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family at this time .
Given the incredible efforts, dedication, loyalty and sacrifice which you have lovingly extended to your Father and Mother for so many years, in my opinion there can be no doubt where your strength and dedication was developed.
Your parents were (and are) two of the most generous, thoughtful and kind people people I have known. Kindness and giving beyond description.
I speak of Andy and Sonja as a single unit because that is what they always were to me.
I first experienced their exceptional qualities in Beausejour when, with their usual generosity and quiet assistance, they made sure I was never in need.
Andy was a competent and thorough policeman and one quality which I will not forget is that he never had a nasty or mean word to say about anyone.
Andy was always thoughtful to everyone he knew and to those with whom he merely came into contact.
Andy always thought of the welfare of the other person and never himself, he was an exceptional human being. Kind regards,
Bill
It is sad news indeed, but for old folks like me not unexpected, because we none of us knows when the Lord’s call will come. As we age, l think most of us begin to accept that the time is near, and most of us are ready for the great beyond, albeit not in a rush. I am deeply grateful for the longevity that some of us are blessed with, but l am more grateful for the friendship and camaraderie of dear friends like your Dad. He will always be known to we Troop Mates as “Andy”, and l now must convey this sad news to those of us remaining. I have often thought about our times together, both good and not so good. We were truly “Brothers”, sometimes more so than with our natural siblings. We worked, played, and even suffered together under the sometimes harsh discipline and treatment meted out for the express purpose of binding us together as one. We were “F-6 UTroop”. We laughed, struggled, schemed, cursed and swore, and often acted the fool for no other reason than the need to stick together and have a laugh as troop mates. That corny old phrase one for all, and all for one was as true as life itself, and we bonded despite anything thrown in our path. None of us were immune to that fate, one or two perhaps were somewhat less attached, but the ties were still there whether we liked it or not. And every time one of us is ordered to “Fall Out”, we reshuffle our ranks and soldier on. I truly wish that ‘F-6 U Troop’ could re muster for one last time on that big parade square in the sky. Wouldn’t it be grand!? The “Last Post” has sounded for Andy…but somewhere the “rouse” and “Reveiller” is being trumpeted for him. See You Andy…God bless you ✝️ and don’t forget to stand up straight! Thanks for the Friendship. “EB”. (That’s what Andy used to call me”
Andy immediately took me in as one of his own and had no idea Andy would become a steadfast pillar of support in my life. As a preteen, Andy was waiting patiently outside Jim Hill Middle School in Minot, ND, to pick me up. Without fail, he was there, his punctuality a testament to his character. But it wasn’t just about rides home. Andy’s commitment persisted as he and Sonja would come to Minot to watch me perform in concerts and games. This blew me away how much he invested in being a part of my life because I thought I was just the son of a man his daughter was dating. But, he never once treated me like that. The only times Andy ever got nasty with me was if I tried to pay the bill at the Big “A” Tavern for breakfast which I never got away with doing.
Yet, beyond these cherished memories, one memory means more to me now than before, as I begin my own marriage. It’s the memory of how Andy loved his wife, Sonja. The way he adored her, the devotion he demonstrated, and the unwavering support he provided – it was a love story that inspired us all. Rest in peace and God bless you, Andy.
Love,
Austin
P.S. I wish we would have gone to Sargent Sundae more as the Sargent Sundae mascot had to be modeled after him!
