Margaret Fanny “Florence” (Cullen) Mackesy, of R.R. #1 Paisley, passed away after a brief illness at South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Chesley on Thursday, September 21, 2023, in her 83rd year.
Florence was an avid reader, which led her to a career as a librarian. She worked in St. Catharines as a noted reference librarian for several years. Florence then completed her Master of Library Science at the University of Toronto before moving back to her native Bruce County. Her passion for reading didn’t just include books but included the likes of The Rural Voice, Legion publications, and local newspapers. She was a regular at the Chesley Library and a proud member of the Brown Bag Book Club. Florence was the family historian and was deeply committed to her family’s genealogy. She will be dearly missed.
Loving sister of Jim Cullen and his wife Valerie Wasserfall of R.R. #1 Paisley. Florence will be fondly remembered by her nephew James of Holland Township and niece Stephanie Cullen of London. She was predeceased by her brother Les, and parents James and Marjorie (Young) Cullen.
In following Florence’s wishes, her body was donated to science and no further services will be held at this time. Inurnment in Chesley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Bruce County Public Library or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
When Pat Brooks, Jim Crowther, my husband Bill Christie and I met and visited with you in 2014, it was such an interesting event in our travels. We were in Bruce County seeking information about the Christie family. You took time and interest in our quest. You shared information, photos, stories. We all learned more about the Christie family. My experience with you led me on another trail, to my family in Norway. We are all connected.
Rest in peace.
With my sincere sympathy, Jim and Valerie and family, on the loss of a treasured loved one.

It was with great sadness that we learned of Florence’s death. She was a lady we greatly admired. Her humour and the knowledge of family history she was so Willing to share meant much to us. We had several days out together over the years and both enjoyed the company and the history. I shall miss her card and notes at Christmas. Thinking of you .
